The city itself is situated on a peninsula that juts out into the bay and is almost completely surrounded by water. As one of the oldest cities in Europe dating back to the time of the Phoenicians in 1100 BC it has had a long and interesting history a lot of which you can find out about today in its many attractions. Also serving as the starting point from which South America was discovered and conquered, the old town of Cadiz in the centre still has many remnants of times gone by.

The city’s Cathedral whose golden cupola dominates the skyline, Santa Cruz, and San Felipe Neri churches, La Santa Cueva home to many Goya paintings, and stately mansions like Casa del Almirante, and Casa de las Cadenas are all well worth a good look. And not forgetting the famous Carnival de Cádiz which takes place 40 days before lent every year and is one of the biggest street parties in Europe. Join thousands of people all in fancy dress in a party mood and get lost in the frenzy of relaxed and friendly revellers from all over.

Transportation in Cádiz
Due to its narrow cobbled streets and compact layout the centre of Cadiz is best seen by foot. La Hispanidad is where most of the buses to Sevilla, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Jerez, Tarifa, Arcos de la Frontera, Ronda, Málaga and Algeciras. Buses to Madrid also run daily from Plaza Elios. The train station at Plaza de Sevilla has services to Seville, Puerto Santa Maria, Jerez de la Frontera, Córdoba, Barcelona, and Madrid.

Weather in Cádiz
The climate is very agreeable in on the coast of Andalucía. The summer months from May to September can get very warm the coastal breezes coming from the Mediterranean cool things down a little at night. There are normally showers during April, October and November, with the rest of the year rarely seeing the temperatures dropping below double figures.

Nightlife in Cádiz
The two parts of Cadiz, the old and the new, are home to lots of nightclubs and bars of different types. Along with your traditional tapas and wine type bars there are a lot of modern alternatives as well. Depending on the night Medusa next to Plaza San Francisco can cater for your needs with live music and DJ’s that play everything from 50’s rock to minimal house music, Pay – Pay also plays a lot of live music in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

Short Breaks
Along the coast to the north or the south there is Chipiona, Rota, Chiclana, Barbate, Conil, all of which offer stunning beaches and tranquil seaside villages with local delicacies and a lively nightlife. More inland there is Jerez famous for its unrivalled equestrian shows and sherry making facilities, and Arcos de la Frontera with its striking positioning above a limestone ridge and whitewashed rooftops. A little further west the town of Ronda positioned high above the Tajo gorge is truly a sight to be seen.
